Bookkeepers love numbers that’s for sure! It takes a certain personality and particular traits to be a good bookkeeper, just like it does with any trade. The general response you get when you tell someone you’re a bookkeeper is usually, “that sounds like a boring job” or “aren’t bookkeepers’ dull?” You should never judge a book by it’s cover! The stereotype of bookkeepers being geeky or unsociable is further away from the truth than you could imagine! I’m yet to meet a bookkeeper who is typical of the stereotype
Some of the things I’ve heard about bookkeepers’ and accountants and the actual truth…
“Bookkeepers and accountants are boring”
I am in a community of bookkeepers and accountants on Facebook. Everyone is sociable, helpful and supportive. We all share our experiences and talk about what we get up to in our spare time. We work long hours and our roles mean we have to have attention to detail and our concentration levels have to be tip top to ensure our numbers add up. We all like to let our hair down in our spare time just like you do!
When I was younger I travelled to Borneo to help rehabilitate orphaned Orangutans following on from graduating university with a degree in Biological Anthropology. Believe it or not, this is what led to my career as a bookkeeper. I took up a role in an accountancy practice in order to fund my trip and that’s where I discovered my love for problem solving. See not so boring, eh?
“People in finance are Old Fashioned”
Bookkeeping goes way back! In fact the earliest evidence of bookkeeping dates back to 1299! That’s a fact, but bookkeeping has to keep up with the times. Bookkeepers’ have to be ahead of the game when it comes to software and technology

“I can do my bookkeeping myself”
When starting out in business you may think keeping on top of your bookkeeping will be easy to manage. But, there will come a day when you get far too busy and your bookkeeping will be the first thing to get put on the back burner. When this happens your accounts will get harder to control and manage, you will lose sight of your finances.
Bookkeeping is a necessity for all businesses, in fact it’s a legal requirement to keep a record of all your business transactions.
At Grow Accounting Ltd we look after the bookkeeping needs of sole traders and small to medium sized businesses. If you’re looking for an expert who can manage your books as well as advise you of any potential savings you could make, then we’re the bookkeepers for you!
We can support you with the growth of your business by helping you to put steps in place in order to achieve your goals.
“You only need to do your bookkeeping once a year”
If you don’t have many transactions then yes it is possible to just do your bookkeeping once per year. However, by not monitoring your transactions more consistently it’s harder to be aware of your financial position which can hold you back from making important business decisions. This can stunt your business growth. It’s important to be consistent with your bookkeeping so that you can forecast for the future success of your business.
“Bookkeepers and Accountants are expensive”
When you weigh up the amount of time you will save in order to concentrate on your area of expertise within your business, or to just get back some valuable time, you will see that the amount we charge will be a great investment for you and your business. Did we mention that your bookkeeping fees are an allowable expense? We know exactly what you can and can’t claim for to ensure that you don’t pay too much to the tax man. Every penny counts in your business!
